23A – Your Venture’s Unfair Advantage

  • A list of all of my resources in my venture:
  1. A human capital asset I have is my education at the University of Florida, Warrington College go Business. As many of us know, the University of Florida is a top 7 public university with an acceptance rate of 39%.
  2. Another human capital asset I have is my previous work experience and trainings. Although I am a rather new twenty-one year old, I have worked 6 different consecutive jobs since I was 16 - going on 7.
  3. As a military child, I have moved around the world from a young age. From doing so, my family and I have created a large network with uncountable individuals with different backgrounds and experiences within different industries. This would benefit me as a social capital.
  4. My own personal savings account in which I have been investing into since I was 16 is a financial capital of mine.
  5. After serving as an Executive Director of Warrington Welcome, a Career and Leadership Program within the Heavener School of Business, I believe I can provide significant organizational culture capital.
  6. Another social capital asset I have is my network of friends and collegues who work for Whidbey Coffee, the business I would like to franchise on the campus at the University of Florida.
  7. Another social capital asset I have is my network of friends who have worked and currently work at several different Starbucks facilities across campus - who are willing and able to share the inefficiencies and necessary improvements to capitalize on.
  8. Another capital asset is my knowledge of coffee production and the industry after residing in the state of Washington for the past 6 years. Otherwise known as the "coffee state" where the Starbucks company originated. However, any true resident of Washington state does not purchase Starbucks products.
  9. Another social capital asset I have is my network within the Warrington College of Business - both faculty, students, and alumni.
  10. Lastly, I believe the skills I've attained from my previous internships, leadership positions, and part-time jobs would be an extremely valuable capital asset.

  • My "VRIN" Analysis of each resource:

  • My Top Resource:

I believe my top resource from this list, as depicted within my "VRIN" analysis above, is my network from being a military child for the entirety of my life. Not everyone, in fact a significantly small proportion, of the world population gets to experience the "military life." I've lived in more states and countries overseas than I can count. Throughout this time, I've met countless individuals in different generations, career paths, with different backgrounds, experiences, and connections themselves. Military affiliates absolutely love to help out fellow military affiliates - especially those who have been overseas. I believe utilizing and capitalizing on this network as well as their second or third person connections is my top resource.

  1. Hi Caitlyn!
I love how you utilized a chart for your VRIN analysis; that was really creative! After reading through your “unfair advantages,” I thought of so many more ideas for myself. I really like how you included your savings account and your work history, both being super important. I believe your unique mix of social and human capital, along with your experiences, will take you far along whichever path you choose.
Thank you for putting time into this assignment!
    Good Job!

  3. Hi Caityln,
I really liked that you included a chart for your VRIN, I think this allowed the readers a better visualization of your advantages. It is a very important asset that you have worked in the coffee industry which taught you many important lessons as to working with customers as well as how to make coffee. Good Job!
