21A – Reading Reflection No. 2
Bringing In A Second Opinion
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
I chose to read The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, by Guy Kawasaki. In this reading, the general theme was to give the reader over 100 practical tips regarding how to treat and manage your social media accounts like a business as well as utilize a bottom-up approach in order to receive the attention your product, brand, or business wants and deserves.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
Every business idea or product needs to be marketed effectively and efficiently in order to educate, excite, and retain customers. Therefore, your social media is exceptionally important as we all know in this day in age. This book connects to everything we are learning in ENT 3003 - who are target market is, their customer profile, your network. These are all aspects that are equally as important when creating and maintaining your social media profiles and presence. You have to ensure that your branding is consistent, posts are relevant and relatable, and network is consistently engaged.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
If I had to design an exercise in this for class, I would ask every student to create their own Instagram business profile for their entrepreneurial idea - and create three posts for their profile. Then I would create a Peer Review assignment, using the same process and groupings we have already been utilizing in the class, and ask students to select who managed their profiles most effectively and efficiently. I would also ask them to explain why. Therefore after the assignment, students can realize how prospective customers would be viewing and analyzing their profile as well as the different ways they can improve their business profile and effectively treat it like a business.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
Before reading the book, I thought the book was going to be just 100 straightforward random features and hashtags to use on your business profile. However, throughout his tips were much more intentional and conceptual than I had expected. Two of which were my two 'aha' moments when reading the book.
Firstly, one of the lessons depicted in this reading was to give your fans content they want to see, not what you want to create. This definitely got me thinking. I believe this is something we all may struggle with for a business profile because we are so focused on maintaining our own personal profiles. But we have to approach them both so differently.
Secondly, another lesson was to allow your different accounts to talk to each other for cross-promotion. This is an aspect of social media that I hadn't ever thought about before. Many companies do have different accounts based on the different markets and industries together, and they do communicate with each other regularly. I suppose for our class, as we are beginning these entrepreneurial journeys and creating our business accounts - we can have them interact with our own personal accounts as well. This would be appropriate since we are the creators of the product, service, or business.

Hi Caitlyn!
ReplyDeleteI love your choice of book as I almost read this one myself. I also find it interesting how we post what we want to create instead of what the fans want. I find this point especially relevant to me as a music artist operating social media pages. Thank you for putting time into this assignment; now maybe I’ll go read this book.
Good Job!
Hi Caitlyn, I am glad you chose to read this book and write a reflection, it is timely given the topic of the lecture for this module is marketing. I agree, it is important to keep in mind the difference between posting things customers want to see and posting things you want to create. One way to drive down viewership is to completely ignore what the customer wants to see out a desire to simply promote what you want. This makes me think of the difficulties in managing social media accounts that overlap in content. A possible addition to your assignment for this class is requiring students to create these different accounts but having to avoid posting the same content - requiring them to interact with one another but not say the same things. There are a lot of good tips in here that apply to business profiles too!
